The z-structure of disk galaxies towards the galaxy planes

چکیده
Wepresent a detailed study of a statistically complete sample of highly inclined disk galaxies in the near-infraredK ′ band. Since theK ′-band light is relatively insensitive to contamination by galactic dust, we have been able to follow the vertical light distributions all the way down to the galaxy planes. Themean levels for the sharpness of theK ′-band luminosity peaks indicate that the vertical luminosity distributions aremore peaked than expected for the intermediate sech(z) distribution, but rounder than exponential. After fitting a generalized family of fitting functions characterised by an exponent 2/n (n =∞ for exponential, n = 2 for sech and n = 1 for sech2; van der Kruit 1988) we find that the mean value for 2/n in theK ′ band equals <2/n>K′= 0.538, σK′ = 0.198. Since projection of not completely edge-on galaxies onto the plane of the sky causes vertical luminosity profiles to become rounder, we have performed simulations that show that it is possible that all our galaxies can have intrinsically exponential vertical surface brightness distributions. We find that the profile shape is independent of galaxy type, and varies little with position along the major axis. The fact that we observe this in all our sample galaxies indicates that the formation process of the galaxy disks perpendicular to the galaxy planes is a process intrinsic to the disks themselves.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups
It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
متن کاملThe evolving disk galaxy population
In this contribution, I present a simplified overview of the evolution of the disk galaxy population since z = 1, and a brief discussion of a few open questions. Galaxy evolution surveys have found that the disk galaxy population forms stars intensely at intermediate redshift. In particular, they dominate the cosmic star formation rate at z < 1 — the factor of ten drop in cosmic average comovin...
متن کاملStellar Disk Truncations at High–z: Probing Inside–out Galaxy Formation
We have conducted a systematic search for stellar disk truncations in disk–like galaxies at intermediate redshift (z<1.1) using the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) data. We use the position of the truncation as a direct estimator of the size of the stellar disk. After accounting for the surface brightness evolution of the galaxies, our results suggest that the radial position of the truncations h...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملEvolution of magnetic fields in galaxies in the frame of hierarchical structure formation cosmology: future tests with the SKA
Results from simulations of hierarchical structure formation cosmology provide a tool to develop an evolutionary model of regular magnetic fields coupled to galaxy formation and evolution. We use the dynamo theory to derive the timescales of amplification and ordering of magnetic fields in disk and puffy galaxies. Galaxies similar to the Milky Way formed their disks at z≈ 10 and regular fields ...
